What IS that Animal...??
23/11/2018
Autumn is a very busy time at the Zoo, with many animal moves organised before the onset of winter and bad weather. Our Coatis have just moved on to another Zoo, and their enclosure will now be revamped for a family group of Collared Lemurs due to return soon from the Cotswold Wildlife Park, who have decided not to keep the species any more. All of the Collared Lemurs in Europe are descended from Hamerton Zoo Park, from animals imported from the USA; and in order to maintain the species into the future, a number of breeding groups are needed.
A new species for the Park (and for the country!) is the Sumatran White-bearded Civet (Paguma leucomystax). Looking a little like a small, slim, chocolate-brown version of its close relative the Binturong, this Civet has white whiskers, white cheeks and a white tail-tip. Our two new pairs are settling into their enclosures near to the Meerkats, and are beginning to explore their large outdoor spaces for the first time.
