Cheeky little Monkeys...

19/02/2019

Tamarins, and their relatives the Marmosets, are tiny monkeys from the rain-forests of the Amazon. Fourteen species have been kept at Hamerton since the collection was founded, with many young ones reared into successive generations. The Red-handed Tamarin is also sometimes called the Golden-handed or Midas Tamarin, and the species has just returned to the Park after a gap of many years. Five animals arrived at the Park this morning from collections in Germany and the Czech Republic. Once they have settled in, two pairs will live in our two small-monkey houses, and a single female is currently making friends with our elderly male Geoffroy's Marmoset. Although the two make something of an odd couple, the situation is very beneficial for both, pending the new Red-handed Tamarin receiving a mate of her own species.
