A new breed of Donkey has arrived at Hamerton Zoo Park. As part of our commitment to save rare and endangered animals, four Grand-Noir-du-Berry Donkeys arrived today from France. This large black donkey originates from the old province of 'Berry' pre-1790. This region lies to the south of Paris, and is now included in the departments of Cher and Indre. These donkeys are descended from animals originating in the Calatonian area of northern Spain and the French Pyrenees, and were bred for farm work and for pulling canal barges. Numbers have declined dramatically in recent years and the breed is now officially classed as 'endangered'; only 13 foals were registered in 2016, making the Grand-Noir ten times rarer than the better known Baudet-du-Poitou.
