Arrivals from Down Under...
12/09/2016
The collection of animals at Hamerton is very varied and represents the fauna of several continents. We have always had a number of species from Australia such as the Wallabies, Kookaburra and Cassowary. 2016 has seen the arrival of the only Swamp Wallabies in England, which were imported from Texas via the Czech Republic. This interesting species is unrelated to other 'macropods' and we already have the first joey in the pouch this year, along with our first baby Long-nosed Potoroos, Cape Barren Geese and a whole flock of young Australian Wattled Plovers. In newly renovated and extended aviaries in the bird section, recently arrived wild Zebra Finches have fledged their first chicks and Diamond Firetail finches are sitting on eggs.
